Medical Assistant Certification

Gaining a medical assistant certification entails passing the medical assistant exam successfully. If you fail to pass the examination then you won’t be awarded certification. This does not mean that you should lose hope though. If you were unsuccessful the first try, you will be given a chance to take it over again. So you don’t have to worry about failing on your first go. The certification exam includes topics to do with health like anatomy, medical law and ethics, physical examinations, lab procedure, and other administrative topics. Usually the questions are multiple choices but this may vary depending on where you take the exam. Ideally you should be prepared for anything that could come up if you want to do well on this test. Even if you can take the exam again, you are expected to pay an examination fee before taking the exam. So the more times you have to take the exam the more money you will need to shell out for this. To save money, try to pass it on your first try. AAMA charges $250 for first time certification applicants, and $125 for those who want to be re-certified. AMT on the other hand charges $95.

Medical Assistant Certification isn’t Permanent

After being awarded a medical assistant certification, you need to bear in mind that this is not permanent. You will need to seek recertification every couple of years. This is to show that you still have the skills and knowledge to be doing what you are doing. You cannot just forget everything you have learned especially since you will be applying it to your work on a daily basis so in a sense it always has to be fresh in your mind. A certification for medical assistant from AAMA expires every 5 years, while a certification from AMT expires every 3 years. This means that the certification exam has to be taken again every so often. This is to ensure that you have retained all your skills and knowledge through the years. AAMA takes a longer period to expire but the initial exam fees cost a lot more than the AMT exam fees. Consider what is more value for money for you and what is more convenient. Some like taking the exam every three years so the topics are fresh in their minds, while others prefer to take it every five years for convenience. It is really up to you what you prefer depending on your budget and schedule.

When it comes to choosing a career, it is always important to be as qualified as possible. The more qualified you are for a position, the better opportunities and chances will come your way. Being under qualified may hinder you from achieving the success you are after especially since you may not have the same educational achievements as others. Besides, if you are doing something why do it half-heartedly when you can go all the way and be the best you can be? If this is the career path that you want to take then you might as well do it as best you can especially if you have the resources to. In the end you won’t regret it and you will even be glad that you took the extra step to go through medical assistant training and get certified. Be proud to be a medical assistant and prove that you are worthy of this job so that you can advance faster in your profession. In anything you do, it is always better to be more than qualified for a job, then not qualified at all.
